Aydın (Yunanca: Αϊδίνιο). Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin Ege Bölgesi'ne bağlı Aydın ilinin merkezi olan şehir. Şehrin nüfusu 2008 yılına göre 171.816'dır.1927'de 12.000 olan nüfusu 1990'da 107.011'e, 2000'de 143.267'ye, 2007'de 168.000'e 2009'da 172.000'e çıkmıştır. Aydın`dan gün geçtikçe Aydın`da nüfus artmaktadır.

Kökenbilim[]

Aydının eski isimleri Tralles ve Güzelhisar olup 14. yüzyıl'da Anadolu Beylikleri döneminde kurulan Aydınoğulları beyliği döneminde ismi Aydın olarak değişmiştir.

Coğrafi özellikleri[]

Coğrafi konumu nedeniyle ilk çağlardan beri önemli bir yerleşim merkezi olan Aydın'ın kuzeyinde İzmir ve Manisa, doğusunda Denizli, Güneyinde Muğla yer alır. Batı sınırları ise Ege Denizi kıyıları çizer. İlin denizden yüksekliği 40 metredir. Akdeniz ikliminin etkisindedir. Bu iklim şartları ve topografik yapı Aydın ve çevresinde iki ayrı bitki topluluğunun (maki ve orman) gelişmesine neden olmuştur. Bunun yanında zeytin, incir, turunçgiller, kestane vb. kırsal kesimde ise çam ve benzeri türler mevcuttur. En yağışlı mevsim kıştır. Yaz mevsiminde yok denecek kadar az yağış almaktadır. Kar yağışı ender görünür. Aydın, özellikle batıdan gelen hava akınlarına açıktır. Rüzgar yönü daha çok doğu - güneydoğusudur. Bunu güneybatı (lodos) ve batı rüzgarları izler.
